Young Curators design WW2 exhibition to be unveiled on Tuesday 8th May 2012 at 3.30pm

2nd May 2012

Youngsters from Albrighton Primary School will be unveiling a WW2 exhibition next week at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford in front of friends and family. Pupils have worked alongside staff at the Museum as part of the Young Curators Project learning how to handle and display artefacts, write labels and produce display boards for their exhibition.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils, aged 9-11, have spent several months studying the WW2 artefacts loaned to them by the Museum and learning the skills needed to become a young Curator.  The project will come to an end on Tuesday 8th May when the exhibition, designed entirely by the pupils goes on display at the RAF Museum.  The exhibition will be unveiled by pupils from Albrighton Primary School with various guests from the school and RAF Museum present, including the Museum’s Curators.

Artefacts within the exhibition include an incendiary bomb, RAF flying helmet, gas mask box and replica mask, WW2 first aid kit bag, RAF pocket book, boots and a hat.  Visitors to the Museum will be able to view the exhibition, on display in the Museum’s Hangar 1 throughout the summer.

RAF Museum Cosford, Education Assistant Rebecca Gazey says:
“This is a unique opportunity for pupils to sample the varied and wonderful work of a Curator by having to deal with identifying artefacts, interviewing veterans, researching and finally putting an exhibition together for the public to see.”

In order to prepare the children for the ‘Young Curators Project’, Museum staff visited the school assembly to discuss the artefacts the Museum has and how they are displayed. Further into the project pupils visited the Museum and were taught how to handle artefacts and how to write display labels for them.  The display cases for the artefacts have been purpose built by St. Peter’s Collegiate High School.

The Museum is open daily from 10am.  Entry to the Museum is FREE.  Throughout the year there is a wide range of exciting events taking place at the Museum.  For further information on this exhibition and other events scheduled for 2012, please contact the Museum on 01902 376200 or visit www.rafmuseum.org
